A lonely robot and a sexy assassin are the top contenders for this weekend’s box-office. No other films dare face off against either, although two small independents are also coming out in limited release.

Wall·E is a trash-compacting robot who learns there’s more to life than cleaning up a planet polluted by humans, after he falls for a sleek, female droid. He then sets out on an intergalactic journey to be with her. Que cute!

The Buzz: This film has been advertised in theaters for quite some time, so the hype is definitely there. And Wall·E himself looks adorable! According to legend, this film is the last of the leftover projects The Incredibles crew chewed over during an infamous lunch date back in 1994 that spawned several Oscars for Pixar and Disney. Now the ‘toon twosome are poised for another box office return that’s out of this world (and hopefully still doing lunch together).

Note that audiences will be treated to the short film Presto before heading off into space.

Wanted, based on Mark Millar‘s graphic novel series, tells the story of 25-year-old Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy), a disengaged slacker whose life is going nowhere until he meets the deadly, sexy Fox (Angelina Jolie). Que hot!

The Buzz: While the buzz surrounding this has cooled down a bit, initial reviews have garnered back some interest, as have the reports that Universal already has a sequel in development. But is Angelina a box-office draw or just a paparazzi magnet?

Gunnin’ for that #1 Spot, in limited release, is a documentary that follows eight of the top high school basketball players as they compete in the first “Elite 24″ tournament at Rucker Park in New York City.

The Buzz: Beastie Boy Adam Yauch brings us the first project from his newly launched movie company, Oscilloscope Pictures (look for their second project, Flow, later this year). NYC summers are so in right now, what with Sex and the City ruling the world-wide box office and The Wackness gearing up for its July release, but the season hasn’t been favorable for documentaries.

Finding Amanda follows a television producer (Matthew Broderick) with a penchant for drinking and gambling who is sent to Las Vegas to convince his troubled niece (Brittany Snow), a prostitute and stripper, to enter rehab.

The Buzz: Brittany Snow takes a departure from becoming just another a horror-remake queen with what seems to be an engaging performance. Plus, her research with real life prostitutes and strippers for this role made news.

Until next time…
